Why Concrete Sealer is Important

Concrete is a porous material. So it easily absorbs fluids. And in climates where it fluctuates between freezing and thawing, those frozen liquids expand constantly and can destroy any concrete surface that is not properly sealed. And when concrete is not sealed, salt, fertilizer, oil and other household chemicals can damage and/or discolor it too.

Different Types of Sealers

Penetrating Sealers

A penetrating sealer penetrates the concrete and creates a chemical barrier that protects against moisture, water, and deicing salts. It leaves a natural finish without making any changes to the appearance of the surface. And most products are breathable, which allows for the escape of vapors. You commonly see penetrating sealers in outdoor applications, since they effectively protect against the elements. Replacement of this sealer is typically at least 5 years. So its lifespan is quite long, too.

Decorative Sealers

Then we come to decorative sealers, which by the name you can see where we are going here. You can purchase these sealers in both solvent-based and water-based formulations. When you apply them, they typically leave a satin or shiny finish. Users buy this finish for the look and less so for the sealing capabilities. Many decorative sealers enhance the look and aesthetic of the surface. However, they also wear faster and thus need application more often. Due to these cons, you typically find this sealer used in home settings.
